Stone veneer installation in Hayward CA - stone over a wall that stays dry

Got a plain stucco or block wall you're tired of? We check the wall first and set stone with flashing done right, so it stays dry.

Wide paved walkway leading to a large stone-and-stucco house, bordered by lawn and landscaped shrubs.

What goes into putting stone veneer on a wall in Hayward?

Stone veneer installation in Hayward puts a thin layer of natural or manufactured stone over an existing wall, so you get the look of solid stone without building a stone wall, as long as the wall behind it is sound and kept dry.

Most stone calls I get are for a stucco front, a block wall in the yard or a fireplace wall someone wants to dress up. The price moves with the square footage, the stone you pick, how many corners and edges need finishing, how high we have to work, and whether the wall needs repair or a new backing before any stone goes on. The schedule turns on that same wall check, any permit steps for your address and weather mild enough for the mortar to set, and your estimate puts your own wall's number on paper.

What happens when you call us about stone veneer?

  1. Call or send the form

Call (510) 264-7015 or send the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time to see the wall. We're open seven days a week, 7 AM to 11 PM.

  2. I look the wall over

I come out myself, ask what you've noticed and check what's behind the current finish, because that decides how the job goes. Your estimate lays out the square footage, the stone, any backing or repair the wall needs first and the price, so you can see what the number is made of.

  3. We handle permits and prep

Once you say yes, we check with the city or county office that covers your address, and if a permit is needed we do the paperwork and the inspections. If the job calls for an engineer's design, I'll have told you at the estimate, and we build from that design.

  4. We build it and walk it

We set the stone, clean up and walk the finished wall with you once I've checked every course, the way a cook tastes before a plate goes out. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.

How we install stone veneer, and the walls it goes on

I start where nobody looks, behind the finish, because stone only holds up on a wall that's sound, so we check for rot, cracks and soft spots and fix or flag them before anything goes up. Then we take our time on the flashing and the water barrier, since that hidden layer is what sheds water and keeps the job dry, and it's like prepping every station before the rush in a kitchen. Where the surface won't hold mortar, we fasten lath, a metal mesh backing, and bury it completely in a scratch coat, a first coat of mortar scored so the next layer grips. After that we set the stone so it suits the house it's going on, fill the joints and clean up as we go.

Stone often goes on new masonry too. If you're building a wall in the yard, we can put up concrete block walls and face them in stone, and clean, bare block usually takes mortar without lath. For an addition or a raised floor, foundation block wall installation gives you a base we can finish in stone where it shows, so the house looks all of a piece from the ground up.

Stone veneer questions from Hayward homeowners

How much does stone veneer installation cost in Hayward?

Installing stone veneer across the US usually costs about $25 to $40 per square foot, and that's a national figure, not our price. Where your wall lands depends on its size, the stone, the corners and whether the wall needs repair or lath first, which is what the estimate sorts out.

Can stone veneer go over any wall?

No, stone should only go over a wall that's sound. The masonry trade association's installation guide says not to set it over a wall that's deteriorating or over EIFS, a foam insulation board with a stucco-like finish, so I check what's behind your finish before we plan the job.

Who is allowed to install stone veneer in California?

In California, setting natural and manufactured stone falls under the C-29 masonry contractor license from the Contractors State License Board, so ask each bidder for their license. The trade association's model spec also asks for a certified installer or documented experience on jobs of similar size, and you can ask any bidder for either. We're fully licensed and insured.

What causes stone veneer to fail?

Most problems come from how the stone was put on, and water is usually behind them. The trade association's guide says field workmanship tends to be the main source of trouble, and one lath maker's bulletin ties failures to moisture getting behind the stone and damaging the wall, often made worse by missing or poor flashing and a missing or torn water barrier. Ask each bidder how they handle both.

How long does new stone veneer need to be protected from weather?

Plan on about two days of protection after the stone goes on. The trade association's model spec calls for protecting the work at 40°F or colder before, during and for 48 hours after, and shielding it from drying too fast above 100°F, so pick mild days or expect the crew to cover the wall. One stone maker's guide also says to protect the finished wall for at least 48 hours, so keep that area clear for a couple of days.

Do I need a permit for stone veneer in Hayward?

Ask the City of Hayward Permit Center, the office that receives the documents for building projects in the city. You can download the city's building documents online or call (510) 583-4005 for more information. We're based in Hayward and work in the cities around it on both sides of the bay, and when you hire us, we check with the office for your address and handle the paperwork and inspections if a permit is needed.

  • Concrete block walls

If you want a new garden or property wall with a stone face, a block wall gives the stone a solid, mortar-ready surface to hold on to.

  • Foundation block wall installation

When an addition still needs its foundation, we can lay the block and plan for stone on the part that shows above the ground.
